Cleaning and caring for CPAP equipment

A simple daily and weekly routine that keeps the mask, tubing and machine clean.

Clean equipment is more comfortable to use. A short routine, done at the same time each day, keeps it easy.

Steps

  1. Unplug first. Always unplug the machine before you clean any part of it.
  2. Every day: the mask. Wash the mask cushion with warm water and mild soap, rinse well, and let it air-dry out of direct sunlight.
  3. Every day: the water chamber. Empty the humidifier chamber. Refill it only with the type of water the maker recommends, often distilled water.
  4. Every week: tubing and headgear. Wash the tubing, headgear and chamber in warm, soapy water. Rinse well and hang the tubing to dry fully.
  5. Check the filters. Look at the filters on the schedule in the manual. Replace them when they look dirty or when the maker says.
  6. Skip harsh cleaners. Do not use bleach, alcohol or scented cleaners unless the maker says they are safe for your equipment.
  7. Replace worn parts. Cushions, masks, tubing and filters wear out. If something is cracked, stiff or no longer seals, ask intake about replacements.
