Using a patient lift safely

Train first, check the sling every time, and move slowly with a calm voice.

A patient lift protects both the person being moved and your back. It works best when you know it well before you need it.

Steps

  1. Get trained first. Ask the equipment provider or care team to show you how your lift works before you use it alone. Practice while someone watches.
  2. Check the sling. Before every use, look for frays, tears or worn straps. Do not use a damaged sling.
  3. Use the right sling. The sling type and size are chosen for the person. Use only the sling meant for your lift and for them.
  4. Know the weight limit. Check the weight limit on the lift and the sling. Never go over it.
  5. Clear and prepare the space. Move furniture out of the way, lock the bed or chair wheels, and widen the lift's legs if your model has that feature.
  6. Talk them through it. Tell the person what is about to happen at each step. A calm voice helps them stay relaxed.
  7. Lift slowly, move slowly. Raise only as high as needed, move smoothly, and keep the person facing you. Never leave them alone while they are in the lift.
  8. If something feels wrong. Stop. Lower them gently onto a safe surface, then call for help.
