Traveling with portable oxygen

Plan ahead for batteries, airlines and time away from home.

A portable oxygen concentrator makes outings and trips possible. A little planning keeps the oxygen going the whole way.

Steps

  1. Talk with the doctor first. Before a longer trip, ask the doctor whether the oxygen plan should change while you travel.
  2. Count the batteries. Battery time depends on the setting. Bring enough charged batteries for the whole trip plus extra for delays.
  3. Pack the chargers. Bring the wall charger and, if you have one, a car charger. Charge whenever you can.
  4. Call the airline early. Airlines have their own rules for portable oxygen. Call well before the trip and ask exactly what they need from you.
  5. Keep it with you. Carry the concentrator, batteries and paperwork with you. Never pack them in checked bags.
  6. Bring the paperwork. Carry a copy of the prescription and the equipment provider's phone number.
  7. Same safety rules apply. Away from home, keep oxygen away from flames and heat, just as you would in your own house.
